The Dos And Don’ts Of Holiday Networking
The holidays are upon us, which means there are endless upcoming parties, events and networking galore! While the holidays can be the best time of year for networking, they can also provide significant challenges for those eager job seekers – especially for those designers whose creative juices are overflowing with holiday inspiration. In order to properly leverage your network and begin building new ones for 2013, the staffing experts at Aquent have provided a list of the dos and don’ts of holiday networking.
Do bring a creative business card. Show off your design/marketing skills with a creative business card that will leave an impression.
Don’t specifically mention that you’re looking for a job unless someone asks you. Then casually let them know you’re looking for new opportunities in the new year.
Don’t force it. If someone mentions a possible job opportunity, ask for a business card.
Do show your personable side. If you’re a guest to a holiday party, have a good time mingling and avoid treating it like a corporate networking event.
Do some 1:1 informal networking with connections you’ve made throughout the year; people may have more available time in weeks around the holidays.
Do search for local industry events; tap local staffing agencies, associations, or networking sites for upcoming events around your city.
Do conduct research prior to attending an event. Be up-to-date on the guest list and decide who you want to meet, and with whom a relationship would be mutually beneficial.
Don’t forget to update your online portfolio – although meeting face-to-face is crucial, often times your online presence helps make a long-lasting impression.
Do prepare for the event; write out three to five questions that are substantial enough to spur conversation with new professional connections. Without forcing it, feel free to mention your most recent creative project.
Do follow up with new contacts within 24-48 hours. If sending a LinkedIn invitation, be sure to customize with something personal about your conversation.
The holidays are a great time to participate in the abundance of networking events taking place all around. Use these tips to smartly navigate your events and you’re bound to build some great new business relationships for 2013.

Friday Font Find: Korolev (A Sans Serif Font) Read more: Friday Font Find: Korolev (A Sans Serif Font) | HOW Magazine Blog http://blog.howdesign.com/typography/friday-font-find-korolev-a-sans-serif-font/#ixzz2Gzg2fnIn
Korolev is a sans serif font family in 20 weights by Rian Hughes of Device Fonts. The family is based on lettering by an anonymous Soviet graphic designer from propaganda displays at the Communist Red Square parade of 1937, found in a photograph by Alexander Rodchenko.
Tracings done in Illustrator over Rodchenko’s photograph pinned down the basic character shapes. These were then imported into FontLab, where the full glyph complement was developed. This became the heavy weight of the family. Next, a thin version was designed, and a five weight family which includes bold, medium and light developed from these two extreme weights. This was then augmented by a true italic, again in five weights, and later condensed and compressed five-weight familes were added, keeping to the original geometric construction.
Some imagination was required to construct the letters for which no model was available. The lower case adheres as far as possible to the structural logic of the upper, and ascenders extend above the cap height for clarity in letter combinations such as in “Illustrate”. The excamation mark was reduced in height to match the capitals. The strokes of the W are not quite parallel in the original, and this creates an awkward dark area at the top of the central apex. It was decided that the W should be redesigned to make the strokes parallel for a more even ‘colour’. The low bowl on the R and the P was kept, as though unusual it adds a definite character to the font. There is a small crossbar on the K that was taken through to the lower case k. The capital G appears to have no ‘spur’, though the best image is very blurry and it’s hard to be sure. The 3 has the round top, to better match the Russian, and the
rest of the numbers follow from the capital construction. The comma has been enlarged and straightened but keeps the original parallelogram shape.
Quote Crazy
Recite is a fun website from the creators of the image bookmarking site Piccsy. Plug in any quote and the site will generate a digital poster complete with interesting typography. Some quotes work better than others and it’s best to try a few different templates to find the one that works with your quote. The only frustrating thing is that you can’t fine-tune the line breaks or sizing of the type. Warning: this might drive you crazy. But if you want to make a quote look more profound and you don’t have time to design it yourself, you can still look creative and smart on Facebook.
