The extremely talented Lisa Congdon will be inspiring us throughout 2012 with her 365 Days of Hand Lettering project, a creativity exercise that challenges all of her drawing skills.
Each day for 365 days for the year 2012 I will post an image of something I have hand-lettered: a letter of the alphabet, a word, a phrase, a quote, a name. Some of the lettering will be based on traditional forms of calligraphy or vintage lettering and some will be of my own design. I am taking a calligraphy class right now and will certainly incorporate much of what I learn and practice there. I will be mostly working with ink, nibs and brushes, but will occasionally use pens. Some of the designs will be quite simple and some more elaborate.
Why hand lettering? First, I love typography and type design, lettering and calligraphy. I love old letters, old script, anything written with a nib and ink. Second, hand lettering is something at which I’d like to get become more accomplished and incorporate into my art & illustration practice more fully. This project is an opportunity for me to practice in the context of a personal creative challenge. I had so much fun with my 2010 daily project, A Collection a Day, and I wanted to embark on something this year that was equally exciting to me, but all together different. As with A Collection a Day, I do not profess to be doing anything new or unique here. Many people practice hand lettering daily and have websites dedicated to their work. This is simply an opportunity for me to grow in an area that interests me and share my process and progress with you in a public forum.
